The Sandbox Writing Challenge #62 — Just supposin’ you had…

On Nov 1st, Calen proposed a question that I have answered many times and usually give the same answers, but my priorities are changing and I have a different answer this time. Here’s the question:

If you had $1,000,000, what would you do with it?

My answers to this question used to be self-centered. I’d pay off my student loans, buy a house in Maine, maybe give my dad a chunk of money, etc. But in the last year or so, there are four causes that have become priorities in my life. I donate to each of these on a small scale, but if I had all that money, they’d each get a $250k donation.

NAMI – National Alliance on Mental Illness

FWV – Futures Without Violence (Domestic Violence)

The Trevor Project – Saving LGBTQ Youth

Standing Rock fight against DAPL

    • I realized that I need to be apart of something that wasn’t just about me. Something bigger, you know? So I started looking into organizations that help thousands of other people and came up with these four that represent parts of my life, where my donations could help. I’d given off and on to NAMI for years, but the other three are new. I was donating to Hillary’s campaign, but when she kept making the election one against Trump instead of for her policies, I took the money I was donating to her and put them into these four causes.

      • Good choice. If you ever decide you want to help a specific person, a child, I can highly recommend Compassion International. When we decided to sponsor a child we checked the financials of all these organizations like Christian Children’s Fund, World Vision, etc. We found nearly 100% of your dollar goes to the child through Compassion. We’ve sponsored three kids through there over the years. And they write to you every quarter or so so that you can get to know them. It was very fulfilling.
