FYI: The Martian

I know everyone has seen me writing about watching The Martian. Well, I am VERY happy to report that it is an amazing movie. It is true to the book in most ways. Let’s just say, it captures the essence of the book very well. Matt Damon is wonderful, as usual. And the humor in this movie will definitely give you quite a few chuckles. I won’t give away any of the details so not to spoil it. If you like Science Fiction, humor, and just a damn good movie… this is a must see.

Goodnight, bloggers!

02.20.16 – End of Day Notes

What I did today: Busy busy busy work… writing and reading emails, reading challenge posts and commenting. I did spend a short period of time out on the front porch today because it was in the 60s here in VA. In a bit, I am going to make a cup of tea and watch The Martian.

What I learned today: The Divine wields a beautiful paintbrush!

What I am most proud of today: I made it through the numerous posts for Cee’s Share Your World and left comments on all of them but one who had comments disabled. Pretty darn good or me! I was only 5 days late in replying *cringes*

What did you do today? Learn any lessons? Have a reason to be proud? Share your thoughts with me in the comments!

Randomness – 02.20.16

In our local paper today was an article about 8 deer who came to visit the local liquor store. There was a picture of one of the deer inside.

*laughs* it must have been so cold the poor deer needed a bit of nip-nip.

This is such a small town, that events like this make the headlines.

Saturday 9: Sixteen Tons (1955)

sixteen tons
Saturday 9: Sixteen Tons (1955)

Unfamiliar with this week’s tune? Hear it here.

1) 16 tons = 32,000 pounds, because there are 2,000 lbs. to a ton. Without looking it up, do you know how many ounces are in a pound? 16 ounces! My Home-Ec teacher would roll in her grave if I didn’t remember that!

2) The singer describes himself as having “a mind that’s weak and a back that’s strong.” Think about yourself. Which feels more powerful today, your body or your brain? My brain has always been stronger than my mind… I am more of an intellectual than a body builder.

3) The poor chap in this song has money troubles. Are you good at sticking to your budget? For the most part. I am on a fixed income these days, so it is important to stay on budget. In my youth though, I spent money willy-nilly. My motto back then was “I can always make more.”

4) Tennessee Ernie Ford snapped his fingers as he recorded this song. It’s been said that while it’s possible to snap your fingers of both hands, the noise is louder with your “dominant hand.” (So if you’re a rightie, the finger snap will be louder with your right hand.) Try it yourself. Did you find this to be true? Well, it may have been true at one time, but unfortunately, I had blood poisoning in my right hand and wrist in my late teens and nothing works right there anymore. So now, if I want to snap at all, it is with my left hand and yes, it is quite loud!

5) Mr. Ford appeared as “Cousin Ernie” in three episodes of I Love Lucy. What’s your all-time favorite sitcom? While I adore I Love Lucy, my all-time favorite is and always will be M*A*S*H

6) Tennessee Ernie took the money he made from his performing career and invested in a California cattle ranch. Think back to the last beef your ate. How was it prepared? I browned the ground beef, drained off the fat and added some salsa. It is one of my go-to foods these days since I began a LCHF diet.

7) Mr. Ford passed away at age 72 in 1991. That year, Dr. Seuss also died. What’s your favorite Dr. Seuss book? Oh this is a toughie! I loved all of his books. I guess it is a toss-up between Horton Hears a Who and The Lorax

8) Gene Roddenberry also died that year. Mr. Roddenberry is best known as the creator of Star Trek. Who is your favorite Star Trek character? Most definitely Deanna Troi! She was so beautiful, elegant and knowing!

9) Random question: We’re having smoothies. What’s your favorite? I will have a blueberry smoothie with Greek Yoghurt, a shot of wheatgrass, some ground flaxseed and a dash of stevia. Thanks!

#WeekendCoffeeShare – 02.20.16

If we were having coffee, I would serve you some delicious shortbread cookies with your morning roast. Today being an unusually warm mid-morning in February, we would sit out on the front porch with sweaters on and have a chat.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you about my “gap” moment very early this morning as I stood at the kitchen window waiting for the kettle to boil for my morning tea. I spied through the maple tree a most glorious sight. An orange, pink and red layered sunrise! Time stood still. The moment lingered. I was lost in awe. The kettle whistled and reality slammed me back into the kitchen.

“If only “gap” moments lasted longer,” I would say with a long sigh.

If we were having coffee, I would cackle with glee. You’d stare at me, oddly.

I would whisper, “I am just so excited, you see.”

And then I would tell you that there are only 40 days left until the beginning of the A2Z Challenge and how thrilled I am to be participating.

“This is my second year,” I would tell you. “Are you are joining in too?”

If we were having coffee, I would tell you how excited I am about watching The Martian tonight.

“I didn’t get to see it in the theater, as there are none close to me,” I would confide. “I loved the book and hope they are true to it. Science Fiction is my favorite genre!” I would say as I clapped my hands.

“What’s yours?” I would ask curiously.

And finally, if we were having coffee, we would end our chat by gazing at the small neighborhood where I grew up and reflect on how it has changed, and yet remained very much the same.

If we were having coffee, what would YOU tell me? Let me know in comments!
